I'm thankful for shelter & food.
At church, one the Sunday school classes started a ministry for the homeless and hungry. They put together ziploc gallon bags with various items such as: applesauce, beenie weenies, bottled water, crackers, gum, granola bars, etc. They put them in a box at church for anyone to grab a couple and keep in their car so when you see someone on the side of the road holding a sign, you can easily grab one and hand it to them. Sean grabbed a couple of them b/c he's out and about a lot around Charlotte and sees them often. Well the other night he was on his way to a grand opening of a bank branch, dressed up in his suit and tie where at the branch there was going to be free food (beef wellington) and free drinks. It was raining hard out and he saw someone on the side of the road with a sign. He rolled down his window and headed the guy one of the bags. The fella was so thankful and said, "God Bless You". And for Sean it was a very emotional moment b/c before the light even changed the guy quickly ripped it opened and already had a few things open and eating them desperately.
I know for me, sometimes it's hard to suppress the judgement on why they are standing there, but if they are hungry and homeless at the moment, what does it matter? Whatever the situation, we sitting in our cars are better off. I encourage you to make up a ziploc bag of goodies. I mean don't we all have something to spare in our pantries?
I'm thankful for food that I have available to me everyday, all day. I'm thankful for my shelter, a warm, safe, cozy home. It may not be the cleanest, most up-to-date or best decorated, but I have it.
